Barons' Hot Shooting Sinks Sailors
Fountain Valley's offense explodes in 74-58 win over Newport Harbor.
Senior Judd Chamaa scored 22 points, including 11 in the first quarter alone, and four Barons in all scored in double figures as Fountain Valley won its fourth game in a row, 74-58, Wednesday night at home over Newport Harbor.
"We really shot the ball well," Barons coach Roger Holmes said. "I think we hit 10 threes in the first half, and it was still a close game. But tonight we made some big shots in the second half when we needed to, and that really helped out. It was kind of a game of runs. But we're happy to get out of here with a win."
Fountain Valley jumped out to a 24-9 first-quarter lead thanks to Chamaa's hot start. Newport cut into the lead slightly during the second quarter, but the Barons still led by double digits at halftime, 43-32. Both teams shot well for most of the game, and Fountain Valley was able to stretch the lead throughout the second half with timely shooting and aggressive rebounding on both ends of the floor.
Chamaa's 22 points led all scorers in the game. For the Barons, junior Sean Myers added 14 points, junior Nathan Moss had 11 points, and senior Zach Matar added 10 points. With the win, Fountain Valley moved to 14-6 overall for the season, and is in a three-way tie atop the Sunset League at 3-1. The Barons go on the road Friday night at Los Alamitos, which is coming off a loss Wednesday night against Edison.
"To go on the road in the Sunset League and get a win, it's tough," Holmes said. "We'll have to play really well to get out of there on Friday with a win."
