Barons Win Third Straight

Huge second-half 3s by Myers lead Fountain Valley boys to 50-49 win at Huntington Beach.

Fountain Valley Junior Sean Myers is a classic pass-first point guard. But during the fourth quarter of the Barons' Sunset League matchup at Huntington Beach on Friday night, he was a stone-cold assassin, hitting two straight three-pointers to help Fountain Valley win its third straight game, 50-49.

"When we run through our stuff in practice, that's an option for him," Barons coach Roger Holmes said. "He knows he's able to do that. He's tough, he's quick, he's fast, and the more experience he gets, the better he's going to be."

The Barons jumped out to a 13-8 first-quarter lead and went into halftime up 28-26. Fountain Valley led by as many as six midway through the third quarter, but the Oilers made a run and had a 45-42 lead with about four minutes to play in the game. That's when Myers went to work, hitting a three-pointer to tie the game at 45, and then another moments later to give the Barons a 48-45 lead. After Huntington Beach scored to cut the lead to one at 48-47, junior Nathan Moss added a putback to put the Barons up 50-47. After Moss missed the front end of a one-and-one, the Oilers scored again to make it 50-49. With 2.8 seconds to play Barons senior Zach Matar fouled Huntington Beach senior Dirk Cason, but Cason missed both free throws, sealing the win for Fountain Valley.

The kids did a great job tonight," Holmes said. "They've been working their butts off. I thought we did a great job on both ends of the floor. Our rebounding was really good tonight."

Matar was the high scorer for the Barons with 15 points. Myers finishd with 11 points. The Barons' next game is Jan. 19 at home against Newport Harbor.
