City Council to Conduct Study Session on Sex Offender Parks Ban

The special meeting of the council will feature a presentation from the Orange County District Attorney's office.

The Fountain Valley City Council will hold a special meeting Tuesday before its regular meeting to discuss a ban on sex offenders in the city's parks.

The special meeting will be a study session featuring Susan Kang Schroeder of the Orange County District Attorney’s office, who will brief the council on the Orange County Sex Offenders Ordinance.

Several Orange County cities have implemented bans on sex offenders in their parks, including Huntington Beach, Orange, Tustin, Fullerton, La Habra, Westminster and Los Alamitos. City Manager Ray Kromer said that the city was considering its own such ordinance, which at the time, was in the process of being drafted by City Attorney Alan Burns. Kromer said at that time that the city wanted to see how similar ordinances played out in surrounding cities, including Huntington Beach.

At its regular meeting Tuesday night, the council will also conduct a review and discussion of . Council member Steve Nagel first raised the issue at the council's March 20 meeting, and has since said publicly that monthly stipends and paid benefits like health insurance, life insurance and retirement should be eliminated.
