Heart disease is the No. 1 killer of women, and it’s deadlier than all forms of cancer combined. It causes one in three women’s deaths each year, yet only one in five American women believes that heart disease is her greatest health threat.

“Women’s lives are unnecessarily at risk and they don’t even know it,” said Christine McCauley, 2014 Go Red For Women Luncheon volunteer chair and Edwards Lifesciences’ corporate vice president, human resources. “It’s our mission to teach women how to identify the symptoms of heart disease and encourage them to take care of themselves so they can continue taking care of those around them. One in three women does not need to die of heart disease each year; together we can change this statistic.”

The half-day event brings Orange County's top community and business leaders together for education, networking and fun. The 10th anniversary celebration will feature motivational speakers, educational breakout sessions, an informational health expo, silent auction and a heart-healthy luncheon.

Among the guest speakers are Orange County resident Najla Debow who is celebrating her 10th anniversary as a heart attack survivor and Cindy Burns of the Funniest Housewives of Orange County.

Go Red For Women raises awareness of heart disease in women and empowers them to take charge of their health. Go Red For Women has been impacting the health of women for 10 years. Since 2004 more than 627,000 women have been saved from cardiovascular disease and 330 fewer women are dying per day.

Funds raised at the Go Red For Women Luncheon help the American Heart Association continue its support of lifesaving heart disease and stroke research. Since 1949, the American Heart Association has invested more than $3.3 billion in research. That investment has yielded or contributed to many important discoveries, including CPR, life-extending drugs, like clot-busters; pacemakers, bypass surgery, the heart and lung machine and surgical techniques to repair heart defects. These and other advances make it possible for many to call themselves “survivors.”

The 2014 Orange County Go Red For Women Luncheon is sponsored nationally by Macy’s and locally by Edwards Lifesciences. Additional sponsors include SMS, UC Irvine Health, Abbott Medical Optics, MicroVention Terumo, AM Solutions Group, BCU, Roth Staffing, Shook, Hardy and Bacon and St. Joseph Health.
