Call Of The Wild

The majestic, independent Siberian Husky is also one of the most playful and lovable breeds around.

Often touted as being one of the most beautiful dogs in the world, the Siberian Husky is an intelligent, playful, gregarious member of the working class of dogs. He is a social dog who enjoys being with his "pack," and is not a dog to leave in a backyard all day. A great family pet for experienced dog owners or others who research the breed carefully, this sneaky, mischievous clown can be a handful.

Siberian Huskies require a lot of exercise. Bred to run, they make great running partners. Carting and scootering are two sports popular with Husky owners. Fun for both dog and owner, these sports require the dog to pull a scooter or cart. The dogs love it and it enables them to get an excellent workout. Never leave your front door open if you own a Husky; he will be out in a flash running through your neighborhood. He won't listen to your frantic calls either; his natural instincts kick in and he is gone. Being hit by cars is the leading cause of death for Huskies. They should never be off leash unless in an enclosed or fenced area. If your Husky does not get enough exercise, he will destroy anything in his path to alleviate boredom, including shoes, the corner of the dining room table and your yard.

Naturally a clean dog, the Siberian Husky grooms itself like a cat. Most owners do not bathe their dogs but a couple times each year. Siberians do shed quite a bit, usually twice a year. This is called "blowing fur," and the name is  a perfect description of what occurs. The blizzard of fur can last up to three weeks, but with weekly brushing it can be tamed and made manageable.

As a friendly, people-loving dog, the Siberian does not make a good guard dog. His appearance may scare away some intruders, but he would rather jump up and lick their faces than bite them. The Siberian is very trainable but a bit willful. A new owner should be firm and on guard, as the Husky will constantly test you. As a breed, Huskies are thought to have a high prey instinct, but as with all breeds, personality traits will vary with each individual dog.

Huskies are a healthy breed, and hip dysplasia and eye problems are the only medical issues these dogs are know to have. A delightful, loveable dog, the Siberian Husky makes a great pet for the right owner. Given exercise and lots of attention, they will be your loyal companion for life.
