Disaster Preparedness for Pets

Pets are part of the family, so make sure they're taken care of no matter what happens.

The recent disasters in the news have placed emergency preparedness first and foremost in the minds of many Southern Californians. It is very important to equip our pets and ourselves with lifesaving supplies in case of a disaster. In addition to the family's evacuation kit, there should be supplies for the pets as well.

An action plan should be determined ahead of time. If it is necessary to evacuate, can you go to a friend's house out of the danger zone, a relative's home, or a pet-friendly motel? Don't leave your animals to fend for themselves. If it isn't safe for you and your family, it isn't safe for your pets. And be forewarned, not all Red Cross shelters accept pets.

On its website, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals offers a free rescue alert sticker. This sticker will let people know that pets are inside your home. Fill out the information on the sticker and place it on one of your front windows. If you evacuate with your animals, write "EVACUATED" across the sticker.
