Great Escape: It's for the Birds

Get away to the Bolsa Chica wetlands.

One of the great things about Fountain Valley is that we are so close to neighboring communities with great activities and escapes that we can enjoy. One such place is the Bolsa Chica wetlands.

I’ve been to Bolsa Chica with my daughter’s girl scout troop, a boisterous field trip, if ever there was one. But, until this week, I had never gone there by myself. The experience is completely different. I was able to take my time enjoying the scenery, listening to the quiet sound of the wind and the calls of the birds. It was peaceful and rejuvenating.

Located on the coast in nearby Huntington Beach, Bolsa Chica occupies more than 1,200 acres of undeveloped wetlands, lowlands and lower mesa. It’s a pristine and lovely spot to visit and commune with nature.

Estuaries lead to the salt marshes, which provide a rich source of food for the many species of migratory birds that stop at Bolsa Chica for a snack or to stay and build a nest. More than 200 species of birds have been documented at Bolsa Chica, so bring your binoculars and birding handbook.

The well-trained docents are available to help point out species of plants, fish and birds and tell you their history. While there I saw egrets, pelicans, sandpipers, godwits, turtles, a hawk and much more.

On the first Saturday of each month from 9 to 10:30 a.m., the docents offer free tours and tell “The Bolsa Chica Story.” You will learn about its history, birds, endangered species, ecology and restoration. Or, just make an escape and drop by on a weekday.
