Mom, Can I Have a Pet?

Tricks and tips on selecting kid-friendly pets for your family.

If you are a parent, you have heard or will eventually hear, the words, "Pleeeeease, can I get a pet?" from your children. Don't panic. With a little research and planning, it's easy to incorporate a pet into your household. There are many pets available that are kid-friendly.

An important conversation to have before bringing home an animal is who will be responsible for its care. You also need to think about your household and lifestyle.  Do you have room for a large pet? Are you out of town a lot and need a low-maintenance pet? Once you have defined your pet parameters, then it's off to the rescue group, shelter, or pet store. Here is a short list for your consideration of companion animals that are suitable for children:

  • Dogs: Good-natured dogs such as the golden or Labrador retrievers, Maltese, dachshunds, and beagles make great pets for active families.
  • Fish: Even the youngest children can enjoy an aquarium full of tropical fish. Children can feed the fish and help their parents clean the tank.
  • Hamsters, rats, and gerbils: These caged pets are fun and easy to handle. My children have experienced hours of enjoyment from our hamsters. Please note these cute cage dwellers have a short life span (about two years).
  • Cats: Kittens are such fun to watch and play with but require training to grow into well-behaved cats. Cats bond easily with children and can be fed and cared for by kids. Check first to determine if your child is allergic to cat dander.

Remember, whatever type of pet you choose, you are taking on the task of caring for and loving that pet for its entire life. Pets love us unconditionally; please do the same for them.
