Pets on the Go

Take the whole family on vacation this summer.

Whether they're making a move across the country or on a road trip vacation, a record number of people are traveling with their pets. More hotels and motels are catering to the pet parent crowd, and all the major airlines have adopted pet-friendly policies. These factors are making it easier than ever to share a travel adventure with your pet.

But first ask yourself: Will my pet be happy away from home?  Are pets allowed at my destination?  If you can answer yes to both questions, start planning that trip. If you answered no, then a boarding kennel or pet-sitter would be a better choice.

Here are some things to consider before you set off on a trip:

Air Travel

  • Pets traveling in the cabin must have a reservation through the airline.  Only five to seven animals are allowed in the cabin per flight, so book early.  A reservation is not needed if your pet rides in the baggage area, but you will be required to present a health certificate and rabies vaccination record. It's best to have your veterinarian complete a health certificate for each pet and carry it with you during all travel. Some motels and hotel also require these records.
  • All pets must be at least 8 weeks old to travel.
  • An airline-approved crate or carrier is necessary and should be large enough so the pet can move around. Airline requirements vary, so check on your airline's website for exact carrier measurements.
  • Put together a pet travel kit with your pets favorite toys and blanket, food, water, bowl, medication, leash, waste bags and a first-aid kit. A temporary ID tag with your cell phone number and the phone number where you will be staying is another good idea.
  • If your trip requires more than one airline, allow plenty of time to change planes.
  • Fun fact: Lemurs, monkeys, orangutans, gorillas and chimpanzees cannot be checked as baggage or as cargo, according to the Delta Airlines website.

Road Travel

  • When traveling in a car, your pet needs to be restrained in a crate, carrier or a pet seat belt.  It is much safer than roaming free inside the vehicle.  Several puppy pads placed on the bottom of the crate with your pet's favorite blanket will help her to feel secure and will provide a place to relieve herself if she can't hold it until the potty break.
  • Short trips around town will help her become accustomed to riding in the car and prepare her for the big day. For cats, getting them used to wearing a collar and harness is helpful and will give you more control if they become frightened while traveling.
  • Do not feed your pet while the vehicle is moving.  A meal three to four hours before traveling is appropriate.
  • Dogs should be taught to sit or lie down quietly, keeping their heads inside the car at all times.  Never leave your pet in a parked car.
  • Frequent pit stops/exercise breaks every two to three hours are good for you and your pet. Bring your pet travel kit.
