The Dog Lover's Guide to Allergy Relief

With these tips, you can select the right breed of dog to minimize symptoms, or take steps to limit those from the dog you already love.

A truly hypoallergenic dog breed does not exist. However, there are a few dog breeds that are touted as being better suited for people with allergies.

Dog breeds that shed less are more likely to be hypoallergenic. Skin and saliva proteins, not just hair, trigger allergic reactions. All dogs shed and produce dander and saliva, and the degree to which the allergens are present varies by breed and even by individual dog.

Research shows that small dogs generally produce less allergens than large dogs. Less shedding is a more important factor than less hair. It is also important to note that dogs that spend considerable time outside can also bring outdoor allergens into the home as well.

If you are an allergy sufferer and interested in getting a furry pet, here are some tips to reduce the allergens in your environment.

  • Frequent bathing reduces allergens.  A daily wipe down with a wet washcloth can help when a bath is not fesible. If grooming the dog yourself, do it outside the home.
  • Vacuum often and use air filters and purifiers.
  • Think about replacing your carpeting with hardwood flooring.
  • Restrict the dog to certain areas or rooms in your home.
  • Allergy shots are a last resort, and can lessen the effects of allergies in some people.

Visit a breeder or spend time at a shelter with the dog of your choice before comitting. A short list of dog breeds many allergy sufferers can tolerate follows:
