Local Seniors Pack Annual Senior Expo

More than 600 attended the event Thursday at the senior center.

More than 600 local seniors made their way to the Center at Founder Village on Thursday for the city's annual senior expo.

The Hawaiian-themed event featured more than 60 vendors offering information on products and services as well as free medical screenings.

"We're servicing the senior community," said Yolanda Markey, recreation coordinator for the city's Recreation and Community Services department."It's getting the information out to them. It's giving them information on on health care, screenings, all types of things that are good for them so they have the information that they need. They come here and they can go to each booth and get all the information. Even if they do know it, maybe their information is past, and now they have better information. That's what's good about it: We're giving them all the information they need so they can make a great decision."

Along with free massages, those in attendance could have their blood pressure checked and have an ultrasound of their carotid arteries to check for signs of a possible stroke. It's these sorts of preventative measures, said Fountain Valley Regional Hospital's Jay Vogelsong, that make the senior expo such a valuable event.

"This is a great opportunity for us to talk face to face with some of the seniors in our community," he said. "A lot of times they have questions they can't get answers to by talking to their neighbors or by waiting to see their doctor...our senior population is very important to us. Typically, as we age, we use health care more, so at that point there are all sorts of new tests and new procedures that people are learning about, and a lot of times it can be overwhelming. To be able to come to an event like this, there's a great wealth of information about health care."
