Frugal Family: Deals of the Week

Get your cheese on in Fountain Valley.

We Americans have a long history of enjoying a good national celebration. We celebrate freedom on the Fourth of July, pay tribute to our armed services on Veterans Day, and pay tribute to the American worker on Labor Day. And in the month of April, we celebrate National Grilled Cheese Month. Yes, an entire month devoted to the grilling of cheese on bread. So, to aid your celebration, here are a few local deals on a variety of grilled cheeses:

  1. Mimi’s Cafe offers a grilled cheese for the purist with its five-way grilled cheese sandwich. This decadent selection includes cheddar, jack, Swiss and mozzarella on garlic Parmesan sourdough. It costs $7.99 with fries, coleslaw or chips, and you can add salad or soup for 99 cents.
  2. The Corner Bakery has a new grilled cheese selection—the green chili and chicken sandwich on sourdough, made with roasted green chilies, roast chicken, jicama, diced tomatoes and white cheddar cheese. Only $7.49 with pickle and chips, and you can add soup or salad for $1.29.
  3. Old-school favorite Magnolia Café offers its grilled ham and cheese on your choice of bread, with fries, onion rings, coleslaw or fruit for $7.99.
  4. For those who enjoy an upscale twist to their grilled cheese, Café Grill serves a grilled chicken and Brie sandwich. It’s made with grilled chicken breast, Brie, tomatoes and watercress on a baguette and costs $7.50 with salad, soup or french fries.
  5. The Claim Jumper rounds out our list, with a sandwich large enough to share. The grilled Cobb sandwich is made with grilled chicken, smoked bacon, fresh avocado, blue cheese with garlic aioli on grilled herb bread and costs $9.99 with salad, slaw, fruit or fries.
