The unemployment rate in Fountain Valley increased from 5.6 percent in December to 5.9 percent in January, according to preliminary data released by the state last week.

California as a whole saw a similar trend, increasing from 10.3 percent to 10.4 percent in the same time period.

The figures are not seasonally adjusted, meaning seasonal temporary work such as holiday employment is not factored into the rate. The seasonally adjusted figure shows the state as a whole staying the same with a 9.8 percent unemployment figure.
