Video: The Cottage Restaurant's Last Meal Was Served Wednesday

The 48-year-old Laguna Beach landmark is expected to be replaced by the Los Angeles-based Urth Caffé.

The landmark Cottage Restaurant across from the Laguna Art Museum on Coast Highway served its last meal Wednesday afternoon.

As Patch reported earlier this month, restaurant owner Jennifer McCulley was forced to shut her business because the separate owner of the Cottage property and its 1917-constructed building opted to lease it to another tenant, Urth Caffé, a Los Angeles-based micro-chain which specializes in organic coffees, teas, and healthy grub.

It isn't yet known when Urth Caffé will open.

Wednesday was a hectic one for McCulley and her staff.

"It's been very emotional," she told Patch. "It's been happy, sad ... it's just run the gamut."

McCulley isn't sure what she'll do next.

Meanwhile, a final Cottage yard sale, including equipment and assorted other items, is set to happen on Friday, Dec. 28, starting at 9 a.m. at the restaurant. The public is welcome.

I grew up in Laguna and over the (many) years have witnessed many closures of laguna / locally owned businesses due to the greed of the landowners. The charm of Laguna is slowly being replaced by the "McChains" of 'trendy' businesses that do not have roots in Laguna nor loyalty to it's growth or population. Sad, just another tourist destination thesedays...

My wife has a retail business in South Laguna. The retail environment in Laguna is VERY tough, we have been open 6 years and 75% of the businesses on both sides of PCH on our block have changed during that time. We would NEVER be able to keep the retail store open if we did not own the building. In this case, the building that houses The Cottage is in a PRIME location and while I never like to see businesses close, there is little doubt that a successful business will open on the site. There is NO vacationer traffic beyond 3 blocks, either side of Main Beach. TO be successful beyond downtown, retail businesses in Laguna need to be smart, progressive, use social media and work their butts off. Maro Wood Grill and Wine Gallery are 2 hugely successful businesses on our block that have great execution.

Laguna Beach triathalon in the 80's was: work at Cottage in the morning, hit West Beach in the afternoon, then work the dinner crowd at Villa James (now Rumari). While it's sad to see the Cottage go, it's super cool that the Urth Cafe is moving in! Sometimes change is good....
