Police Carry Special Olympics Torch Through Fountain Valley

A SWAT truck and two motorcycle officers helped escort the four runners Friday afternoon.

If you saw a fire moving through downtown Friday, hopefully you held off a second before you called the cops.

They may have already been there.

Fountain Valley Police Department officers and staff helped carry the Special Olympics Southern California torch through city streets in an effort to raise money and awareness for the annual sporting event for people with special needs.

Patch caught up with the group as they reached the finish line at Talbert and Beach Boulevard to pass the torch to the Huntington Beach Police Department at about 12:40 p.m.

After his five mile run, Sgt. Adam Hertenstein said special Olympians are a “really big part of the community.”

“It’s great to come out and be able to help them, so that they have the same opportunities as everyone else," Hertenstein said.

The local leg of the Lawn Enforcement Torch Run began at about 11:40 at Magnolia and Edinger when the FVPD procession received the torch from the Westminster Police Department.

Two motorcycle patrol officers, a Fountain Valley Regional Hospital Ambulance, and a FVPD swat truck also took part alongside the four runners.

The torch will continue its journey to light the “Flame of Hope” at Cal State Long Beach, where the games are scheduled to begin Saturday.
