Weird Weather: From Heat Wave to Hail

Thunderstorm causes scattered power outages. More hail possible this weekend.

A thunderstorm blew through Orange County early Saturday, spraying marble-sized hail and causing scattered power outages.

More hail is possible through Monday, according to National Weather Service spokesman Bill Hoffer, who called the downpour "unusual for this time of year."

A heat wave and unstable moist air flow from the south paved the way for the freakish weather, Hoffer said.

The storm caused some power outages, but the disruptions were momentary, said Southern California Edison spokesman Charlie Coleman. "There are no major outages with the weather.''

The National Weather Service tracked the thunderstorm as it moved north off the coast, then came ashore in Newport Beach at about 7 a.m. By 8, it was raining in Long Beach.

Lightning and moderate rain were reported across northwestern Orange County and into Long Beach, as the storm moved toward Los Angeles at about 10 mph.

A severe thunderstorm warning was issued at 8:13 a.m. for the area
between Fullerton and San Onofre on the southeast and downtown Los Angeles and Inglewood on the northwest.

But by 9 a.m., the Weather Service said the storm had petered out, and the severe weather warning was allowed to expire.
