Field & Stream Invites Southern Californians to Be Heroes of Conservation

On Sunday, May 4, Field & Stream will join volunteers lead by the Bolsa Chica Land Trust to help restore wildlife habitat at the Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve in Huntington Beach, as part of the magazine's Hero for a Day program. The magazine will be filming the family-friendly project, to highlight the work of the volunteers and the area's outdoor opportunities. It will be broadcast on fieldandstream.com, a top destination for sportsmen, as part of a ten-video series.

One of California's most significant coastal wetlands, Bolsa Chica is a source of food and rest for hundreds of ducks and other migratory birds, but for many years the area was troubled by habitat loss, pollution, and development. Thanks to the work of many citizens' groups and government agencies, a major restoration of more than 500 acres was launched in 2004 and continues today.

Led by Rene and Jodi Thorn, a mother-daughter team with the Bolsa Chica Land Trust, volunteers from the Union Sportsmen's Alliance (USA) and their families will work to preserve important wildlife habitat and recreational opportunities. Volunteers are invited to join them in planting native grasses and vegetation, cleaning brush and invasive weeds, and maintaining trails and a bridge built to accommodate wheelchair access. This project is perfect for families and all ages are welcome to participate.

Now in the fourth year, Field & Stream's Hero for a Day program, with the support of Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc., works to connect volunteers with conservation workdays across the country and raise awareness of the local efforts of conservationists. The projects serve as a unique opportunity for residents to take action in sustaining and protecting fish, wildlife, and habitat in their area. Field & Stream spotlights ten Hero for a Day projects each year, reporting on the efforts in the magazine and online.
