Steel Hosts Non Profit Seminar

Seminar Offers Free Tax Advice For Nonprofits.

State Board of Equalization Vice-Chair Michelle Steel hosted a tax seminar for nonprofit agencies to help them navigate the tax system last Thursday at the Costa Mesa Neighborhood Community Center. Nearly 200 representatives from local nonprofit agencies were present to learn more about their tax reporting requirements.

Nonprofits organizations while they are by the very nature not businesses still have reporting requirements and many have sales tax obligations.  On hand, were presenters from the State Board of Equalization, Franchise Tax Board, Employment Development Department and the Internal Revenue Service.  Representatives from State Senator Mimi Walters and State Assemblyman Allan Mansoor were also available to assist constituents.

“Nonprofit organizations provide an important role in furnishing much needed support to their communities.  We want to make sure they meet reporting requirements so they can continue their work free of government entanglements” said Steel.  Many different nonprofits were in attendance to include faith based groups, veteran organizations and pet rescues.  “Nonprofits play a key role in the business and social fabric of our community”, commented Scott Peotter with Assemblyman Mansoor’s office.

Presenters remained available for much of day to provide those in attendance an opportunity to ask any questions they might have had that they didn’t get to ask during the presentation.

This event was one of many several tax seminars Steel is hosting this year.  Her next event is a Small Business Tax Seminar at the Cypress Community Center on May 2, 2013.  You can register for the event online at http://www.boe.ca.gov/cgi-bin/seminar.cgi?FLAG=202 .
