Coyote Sightings Skyrocket for May

Property crimes were also back up after dipping in April.

After a slow month in April with just three reports, coyotes were back on the prowl in May with 10 sightings reported, according to crime trend statistics released Friday by the Fountain Valley Police Department.

All 10 reports were actual sightings. Five reports involving multiple coyotes, and three sightings involving coyotes preying on cats or dogs.

Vehicle burglary reports were back up in May to their highest level since March. Resident reported 42 car break-ins in May, up from 31 in April. March saw 39 such reports, which included a string of reports in to round out the month. Almost a quarter of the car burglaries were reported in an area along Talbert Avenue between Brookhurst Street and the Santa Ana River.

Residential burglary reports were also up in May with 20 reported, up from nine in April, which had also been down from March, which had seen 18 such reports. There was also one commercial burglary reported, down from three in April. Reports of stolen vehicles doubled with eight reported, up from four in April.
