Checkpoint to Target Unsafe Drivers

FVPD hoping to reduce car accidents by focusing on high-risk intersection.

Fountain Valley Police will be conducting an annual safety checkpoint today from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., in hopes of reducing traffic collisions and preventing fatal vehicle accidents.

Between Slater Avenue and Talbert Avenue on Euclid Street, the four-lane path will be diverted into two lanes, one for each direction.  Police will be targeting motorists seen without proper safety belt use, distracted cell phone talkers and individuals operating a vehicle without a proper license.

The time and location of the checkpoint was chosen randomly, said FVPD Traffic Sergeant Kurt Ulrich. But in the past, the intersection of Slater Avenue and Euclid Street has had a history of high collision rates due to careless driving.  Ulrich hopes that police presence today will help motorists realize the importance of safe and responsible driving.  “That’s really what the intent of the checkpoint is – to raise these public issues,” he said.
