Cyclist Killed in Traffic Accident

Police: Victim appeared to be transient.

A 50-year-old man was killed Wednesday when his bike was struck by a car around 6:20 p.m. at the corner of Brookhurst Street and Niagara River in Fountain Valley.

According to police, the man, whose identity is being withheld until police can notify his family, was crossing Brookhurst at Niagara River on his bicycle when a Volkswagen Beetle traveling north on Brookhurst hit him, throwing him about 60 feet. The bike did not have a light or any other illuminating device. The victim, who police believe to be a transient, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the Volkswagen was an unidentified resident of La Habra Heights. She sustained minor injuries and was treated at a local hospital. No citiations were issued.
