Elementary School Student Shot With BB Gun in Costa Mesa

The student was not seriously injured, school officials said.

A student was shot in the leg Thursday but not seriously injured by what officials suspect was a BB gun at College Park Elementary School in Costa Mesa.

Just before 8 a.m., four students reported hearing what sounded like a BB gun firing shots, said Laura Boss of the Newport-Mesa Unified School District. One student sustained a wound on the calf from a "small metal projectile similar to a BB," Boss said.

The student was treated in the school's health office and went back to class, Boss said.

Costa Mesa police Lt. Greg Scott said he could not immediately confirm the incident.

School officials have pledged to boost safety on campus with "enhanced supervision" on the playground and ball field on campus, Boss said.
