A former maintenance painter for the Huntington Beach school district pleaded guilty Wednesday to possessing and distributing child pornography and was sentenced to a year in jail.

Roger Scott Hewson, 51, of Fountain Valley, admitted to the two felonies before Orange County Superior Court Judge Robert R. Fitzgerald.

Hewson will be on formal probation for five years after his release and be required to register with local police wherever he goes the rest of his life.

Hewson worked for the Huntington Beach City School District when he was arrested, but prosecutors said the hundreds of illegal images had nothing to do with Huntington Beach students, according to the District Attorney's Office.

Huntington Beach police, working with the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, investigated the case and arrested Hewson on Nov. 7, 2013.

Deputy District Attorney Bobby Taghavi, who prosecuted the case, said police tracked down Hewson by identifying his computer's IP address as one that was downloading and passing along pornography.
