Fountain Valley Stabbing Victim Fighting for His Life, Suspect Charged

The shopper remains in critical condition after being stabbed four times during a carjacking attempt.

A 17-year-old Fountain Valley boy was charged today as an adult for allegedly stabbing a man during an attempted carjacking outside a grocery store.

Steven Matthew Lowry was charged with attempted murder and carjacking, both felonies, and faces sentencing enhancements for the personal use of a deadly weapon and inflicting great bodily injury.

The victim of the Saturday night attack remained hospitalized in critical condition, according to Fountain Valley police Sgt. Ron Varner.

The man, who had been shopping at a Stater Brothers store at 11085 Warner Ave., was carrying his groceries to his car just before 9 p.m. Saturday when he was attacked, Varner said. The suspect demanded the man's keys, and the victim was stabbed about four times during an ensuing struggle, Varner said.

The suspect was arrested about a block east of the crime scene, Varner said. The suspect, who was on probation, was initially booked into Juvenile Hall.
