Los Amigos Coach Pleads Guilty to Sex With 14-Year-Old

Former girls' basketball coach John Tran Nguyen is sentenced to 210 days in jail for having sex with student.

A former Los Amigos High School assistant girls' basketball coach pleaded guilty today to having sex with a 14-year-old girl at the school and was immediately sentenced to 210 days in jail.

John Tran Nguyen, 21, of Fountain Valley, pleaded guilty to felony unlawful sexual intercourse and a misdemeanor charge of battery against a cohabitant was dismissed.

Nguyen was also sentenced to three years of probation and ordered to participate in an anger management program.

``This was an isolated incident,'' said Nguyen's attorney, Ton C. Nguyen. ``We took a plea in our client's best interests.''

A message left with a prosecutor on the case was not immediately returned.

John Nguyen was a coach for the team during the 2010-11 season.

John Nguyen met the victim when she was 14 and had sex with her in his vehicle in December 2010, prosecutors said.

John Nguyen was also accused of slapping the girl during an argument in January in his vehicle when they were parked outside of a convenience store
during school hours, according to prosecutors.

When the girl returned to campus she told school officials she had been slapped, triggering the investigation, prosecutors said.

John Nguyen has until Dec. 7 to begin serving his jail time.
