A 77-year-old man was killed today when his car slammed into the side of a Costa Mesa pharmacy, police said.

The victim -- whose name was not immediately released -- was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at a hospital, Costa Mesa police Sgt. Greg Scott said.

He was pulling away in a 2003 Toyota Avalon from the drive-through window at CVS, 2701 Harbor Blvd., about 3 p.m. when the car suddenly accelerated and slammed into the west side of the store, Scott said.

The driver was taken to Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian in Newport Beach, where he was pronounced dead at 3:44 p.m. of an apparent heart attack, Scott said.
