A 45-year-old Anaheim man was killed when he fell backwards from a sidewalk into the path of an Orange County Transportation Authority bus in Midway City, a California Highway Patrol officer said today.

The accident happened at 6:06 p.m. Sunday at Beach Boulevard and McFadden Avenue in Midway City, an unincorporated community surrounded by Westminster, said CHP Officer B. Martin.

The OCTA bus, which was being driven by a 57-year-old Orange man, had stopped at a bus stop on northbound Beach Boulevard north of McFadden Avenue, Martin said.

"The bus driver stopped and opened the bus door. The driver waited approximately 15 seconds, then closed the bus doors to continue on his route," the officer said. "For unknown reasons a male standing on the sidewalk fell backwards into the Number 4 lane of northbound Beach Boulevard where he was struck by the bus."

The 45-year-old man from Anaheim, whose name was not immediately released, was transported to UCI Medical Center in Orange, where he was pronounced dead by emergency room physicians, Martin said.
