Man Killed by Huntington Beach Police

Authorities say the 20-year-old was shot after allegedly producing a replica handgun.

A 20-year-old man was shot and killed by a Huntington Beach police officer Thursday after allegedly producing what turned out to be a replica semi-automatic handgun, police said.

Officers were called to 4911 Warner Ave. at 4:29 p.m. Thursday by a man who said the suspect and a woman were arguing. The caller said he had been threatened with a handgun, said Lt. Mitch O'Brien of the Huntington Beach Police Department.

A Huntington Beach police helicopter was dispatched and the suspect -- identified Friday as Ian Berrier of Huntington Beach -- and the woman were located walking in a residential neighborhood toward Hoskins Lane and Milo Drive. The man was shot by a police officer after he allegedly produced a replica handgun.

Paramedics arrived after the shooting and pronounced Berrier dead. An autopsy was expected to be conducted Friday, said Jim Amormino of the Orange County Sheriff's Department.

Police have not released the name of the officer, who was uninjured. In keeping with Huntington Beach Police Department protocol, the Sheriff's Department will investigate the shooting, O'Brien said.
