Police To Swear-In New Cop, Honor 2 Other Officers

The badge ceremony takes place June 11.

It’s time to honor some boys in blue with a little gold, authorities say.

The Fountain Valley Police Department will hold a badge ceremony June 11 to swear-in a new police officer and to recognize two long-time service officers who were recently promoted.

Organizers will conduct the ceremony at the Fountain Valley Council Chambers on 10200 Slater Avenue. Officials will welcome Bryan Nguyen to the force and honor Adam Hertenstein for his promotion to sergeant and Marco Avila for his promotion to the rank of senior police officer.

Honorees

Adam Hertenstein

Promoted to the rank of Sergeant with FVPD on May 25, Hertenstein began his career with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department in February 2000. After two years with the LAPD, he joined the FVPD where he worked as a patrol officer and detective.

In June 2006, he was promoted to senior police officer. As a field training officer, Hertenstein has trained more than 15 police officers.

He earned his bachelor’s degree in sociology from California State University Fullerton. A married man, Hertenstein has an eight year-old daughter, and his hobbies include playing and coaching soccer.

Marco Avila

Scheduled to be promoted to the rank of senior officer June 8, Avila grew up in Tustin and graduated from Foothill High School.

Hired as a police officer with the FVPD in 2006, Avila has worked as a patrol officer, resource officer and crisis negotiator. He currently works in investigations as a burglary and auto theft detective.

Earning an associate’s degree from Golden West College, Avila has a number of hobbies including spending time with his family and visiting
vineyards.

Bryan Nguyen

Nguyen grew up in Fountain Valley and attended Fountain Valley High School. He began his law enforcement career at FVPD where he worked as a
police cadet from 2008 to 2011.

At the same time, Nguyen studied full-time at University of California Irvine, earning bachelor’s degree in political science.

In 2011, the Los Angeles Police Department hired Nguyen as an officer, and he worked in the Hollywood division. Nguyen now returns to the FVPD this year as a full-time officer.
