Santa Ana police today said a 13-year-old boy and a 10-year-old girl were killed by their mother, who was publicly identified Sunday.
Marilyn Edge of Scottsdale, Ariz. allegedly killed her kids, left their bodies in a motel room and then tried to commit suicide.
Santa Ana police had delayed identifying the woman or her children until
relatives could be notified of the deaths.
Edge attempted suicide a little after 8 a.m. Saturday when she crashed a
gray Honda Accord into steel poles protecting an electrical vault in the
parking lot of an Albertson's at 2300 Harbor Blvd., according to Costa Mesa
police Sgt. Tim Starn.
Edge, 42, was booked on suspicion of murder, according to a news
statement from the Santa Ana Police Department.
When Edge was pulled from the vehicle, she told Costa Mesa police about
the children, and Santa Ana officers found the bodies just after 9 a.m.
Saturday, Starn said.
The children were in the Hampton Inn & Suites in the 2700 block of
Hotel Terrace, near the interchange of the Costa Mesa (55) Freeway at Dyer
"As she was getting processed (by paramedics) to the hospital, she made
some statements that indicated a crime might have occurred (in Santa Ana),'
Edge was taken to Hoag Hospital in Newport Beach, but Bertagna said she
was eventually discharged to police and was interviewed by detectives.
Bertagna said he would not identify the suspect because the deceased
children's next of kin have yet to be contacted.
He said dispatchers received a call about 8:20 a.m from Costa Mesa
police to check on the welfare of two children about six miles from the vehicle
at the Hampton Inn.
"We went to a room on the third floor and located two children,"
"We are now investigating this (two deaths) as a homicide.''
Police processed the hotel scene well into Saturday night, he said.
