Pre-trial Hearings Scheduled for Accused Murderer, Former Coach Accused of Having Sex with Student

Philip Ngoc Nguyen and John Tran Nguyen are both scheduled to appear in court Thursday.

Defendants in two high-profile court cases with Fountain Valley connections are both scheduled to appear in court Thursday.

Philip Ngoc Nguyen was for allegedly shooting his fiancée in the head after the two argued about Philip Nguyen's affair with another woman. The shooting was orginally reported as a suicide by Philip Nguyen's mother. Fountain Valley police investigated the case and eventually ruled out suicide.

Philip Nguyen is scheduled for a pre-trial hearing at the Central Justice Center in Santa Ana.

John Tran Nguyen is scheduled for a pre-trial hearing at the West Justice Center in Westminster. He was for allegedly having sex with a 14-year-old student at , where he helped coach the girls basketball team. John Nguyen was also charged with misdemeanor domestic violence after he allegedly slapped the girl, according to the Orange County District Attorney's office.

John Nguyen coached the team during the 2010-11 season, according to prosecutors. He met the alleged victim when she was 14 and began dating her, prosecutors said. In December 2010, he allegedly had sex with her in his vehicle. Although prosecutors said the sexual relationship continued over the next year, Nguyen has been charged with just one count of unlawful sex.
