A speeding driver ran a stop sign in Santa Ana Friday and broadsided another vehicle, killing two people inside, then got out of his car with a passenger and walked away.
The crash at Cabrillo Park Drive and Fruit Street in Santa Ana was reported about 11 a.m.
"We have two dead bodies at the scene," Santa Ana police Cpl. Anthony Bertagna told KCAL9. "The vehicle was northbound, ran the stop sign and struck the victim who was making a left-hand turn."
The driver of the black Audi that struck a blue Nissan got out of the car after the crash and headed into a condominium complex, according to police and broadcast reports. Bertagna said the driver was talking on a cell phone as he left the scene. Witnesses said he was wearing a white shirt and black shorts.
One person in the Nissan was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other died a short time later at a hospital.
Bertagna said he didn't know if the accident occurred during a car race, but he did say "we know it was at a high rate of speed."
