Coastline Community College Hosts 'Congress to Campus' Program

The school was visited by two former members of Congress, who toured the campus and met with students to emphasize the importance of public service.

Coast Colleges recently hosted ormer members of Congress Orval Hansen (R, Idaho) and Sam Coppersmith (D, Arizona) for a "Congress to Campus" program.

The two former Congressmen visited Coastline Community College in Fountain Valley, Golden West College and Orange Coast College, where they attended classes to take questions from students, participated in a public forum with former member of Congress and Coast Colleges Trustee Jerry Patterson, and toured the Distance Learning department at Coastline Community College.

"The Congress to Campus program provides an invaluable resource for our students to learn about the significance of public service," said Board President Jim Moreno. "I am grateful to our student leaders, faculty and staff members who dedicated their time to this worthwhile event."

Trustee Jerry Patterson added that as an institution of higher learning, "we greatly appreciate the efforts of the students and staff to arrange this program, and extend our thanks to Congressmen Hansen and Coppersmith for taking time from their schedules to inform our students about the values of public service."

The Congress to Campus program is available every other year to the students that attend the three colleges of the Coast Community College District.  Sponsored by the Association of Former Members of Congress, Congress to Campus involves a visit to an institution of higher learning by two Former Members of Congress. The program aims to inform and attract college students throughout the country to public service and leadership.

"Former members of Congress look forward to meeting with students across the country in this program because the country’s future depends so much upon the talent and energy of our college students," said Matt McHugh, the chair of the Congress to Campus program and a former member of Congress. "We are always reassured by the interest and intelligence of the students with whom we meet."
