High School Students Seek Higher Education

Teens from Los Amigos High participate in Coastline's college health course.

Coastline Community College’s “Credits for College Program” helps Los Amigos High School commence the start of another term by holding Health 100: Personal Health on the high school campus beginning next Monday.

For the fifth consecutive year, the program has provided an inspiration for teens to seek further education after graduating high school, said Los Amigos High School College Counselor Evelyn Garcia. “When students do well in these college classes, they get more confident and that motivates them to want to keep going and pursue higher education,” she said.

The program was designed to help high school students get familiarized with college-level curriculum at a young age. For $16 a semester, students will be provided with textbooks and receive a head start on earning college credits. As students build their transcript with “Credits for College” courses, some may get early registration or even be admitted as sophomores when applying for college, said Michelle Ma, Coastline’s Director of Marketing and Public Relations.

Enrolled students will also have the privilege to accessing unlimited counseling, where Coastline counselors can help guide them to the right college when it is time to apply. Courses on high school campuses differ semester to semester depending on what Coastline and the high school principal feel is most suitable and beneficial for their students. All classes offered are transferable to local community colleges and any four-year universities as part of general education requirements.

Health 100 at Los Amigos High School will be held from Feb. 4 to May 23. The class has met the maximum capacity of 40 enrolled students, and course instructor Robert Flores looks forward to his second year teaching high school students. “I completely enjoy the interaction with students and their curious questions based [on] their own health and their parents’,” he said.
