OC Students Named National Merit Scholars

High School students from Huntington Beach are among about 1,000 nationally to be awarded scholarships.

A dozen Orange County high school students have been named National Merit Scholars, officials announced Wednesday.

The students are among the first winners of the scholarships, which are sponsored by corporations and business-based foundations.

The scholars announced today are among about 1,000 nationally to be awarded scholarships that provide annual stipends ranging from $500 to $10,000 or one-time grants of between $2,500 and $5,000.

The winning students are:

--Matthew Wallingford of Marina High School in Huntington Beach, who won a scholarship from Allergan Foundation;

--Jessica L. Billeter of Marina High School in Huntington Beach, who won a scholarship from Boeing;

--Rachel H. Lee, a student at Troy High School in Fullerton, who won a grant from Boeing Company;

--Maxwell E. Davitt of Sage Hill High School in Newport Coast, who won a scholarship from PepsiCo;

--Sanjina S. Ghanshani of University High School in Irvine, who won a grant from Allergan Foundation;

--Krystal Y. Lai of University High School in Irvine, who won a scholarship from Allergan Foundation;

--Michelle Sixu Nie of Woodbridge High School in Irvine, who won a scholarship from Parker Hannifin Corp.;

--Eric Pai of Northwood High School in Irvine, who won a scholarship from Boeing;

--Mahesh Vashishtha of University High School in Irvine, who won a scholarship from Hoffmann-La Roche Inc.;

--Ellen Yu of University High School in Irvine, who was awarded a scholarship from the Siemens Foundation;

--Thaibao Q. Phan of El Modena High School in Orange, who won a scholarship from Boeing and;

--Hannah E. Huynh, a home-schooled student from Rancho Santa Margarita, who won a scholarship from Boeing.
