School Board to Decide New District Boundaries Tuesday

The board has four potential configurations on the table.

The Fountain Valley School District's Board of Trustees will make a final decision Tuesday night at a special meeting as to how the district's new boundaries will be drawn.

Parents came out in force at the board's , many of whom have children attending and who didn't want to see their kids sent to different middle schools. The board was to have made a decision at the regular meeting, but a fourth boundary configuration was added at the last minute to the original three options, prompting the board to take more time.

The main difference between the fourth option and the other three is that the area served by Courreges would remain intact, with all Courreges students feeding to Fulton Middle School rather than being divided between Fulton and Talbert.

A tentative timeline for transition is also in place once a final decision is made on the new boundary lines, hence the need for a special meeting to make sure that a decision was made by the end of January. Notification of the new boundaries would be sent to parents in February, followed by an open choice period in March during which parents would be allowed to visit schools in the district and decide if they want to request a transfer. Final assignments would be made in April, with staff reassigments following during May and movement of staff and school materials during the summer.

Regardless of which realignment option the board chooses Tuesday, an informational meeting will be held on Feb. 2 to explain the new boudnaries to parents, outline the transition plan, and answer questions.
