Marina High School transgender senior Cassidy Lynn Campbell was selected as homecoming queen in voting announced at halftime of tonight's football game at Westminster High School.
Balloting began with write-in votes a couple of weeks ago which
determined the 10 candidates for a second round of voting. In the second round, students filled out their preferences confidentially on a scan-tron sheet, which was tabulated by a machine.
School officials announced earlier today that the 16-year-old was among
five finalists for homecoming queen.
Cassidy Lynn Campbell was born Lance Campbell, but has been living as a
woman for the past three years.
Cassidy told the Los Angeles Times that she thought of trying to become
homecoming queen last year, but not seriously.
She told The Times she was "doing this for the kids who can't be themselves.''
"With all the attention, I realized it's bigger than me,'' Cassidy told The Times.
