5K Fun Run Hits Stride

The Anytime Fitness 5K Fun Run draws several hundred people, from top athletes to first-time competitors, at the Fountain Valley Recreation Center and Sports Park.

The weather was cool and cloudy with a sprinkling of rain, but that certainly did not dampen the spirits of several hundred runners from competing in the Anytime Fitness 5K Fun Run on Saturday morning at the Fountain Valley Recreation Center and Mile Square Sports Park.

The event supports more than 30 Fountain Valley nonprofits, with 100 percent of each runner's registration fee going to the nonprofit of his or her choice. In 2011, the event generated more than $18,000 for the participating nonprofit groups, and organizers said they expect to exceed that figure this year.

The top men's time of 18:06 went to a group of high school track athletes: Thomas Duckson of Huntington Beach and William Kokal, Jay Bonthius, Brenden Prieto and Hunter Gulino--all from Fountain Valley. The top women's time belonged to Marissa Nickles and Amber Bragdon, both of Fountain Valley. Their time was 21:07.
