Football: Fountain Valley 19, Huntington Beach 14

Barons control Huntington Beach standout Kai Ross to remain tied with Edison for first place in the Sunset League.


Fountain Valley is making some noise under first-year coach Ray Fenton. The Barons defeated the team coaches expected to finish second in the Sunset League, Huntington Beach.  Impressively, Fountain Valley won on the road.

Key Stats: Fountain Valley’s Isaiah Davis rushed 13 times for a team-high 81 yards and intercepted two passes on defense.

Pivotal Moment: Fountain Valley held a 10-0 lead in the third quarter but Huntington Beach was driving when Davis made his second interception. It stopped the drive, and preceded a 12-play drive by the Barons to go up 17-0 on Jacob Church’s 12-yard run with 9:05 left in the game.

Notes: The last time Fountain Valley beat Huntington Beach was 2004. … Scott Schultz, who passed for 84 yards, gave the Barons a 7-0 lead in the first quarter on a 1-yard run. … Jonah Mack kicked field goals of 35 and 39 yards. … The Fountain Valley defense did a great job to keep the Oilers from scoring until the fourth quarter. … Huntington Beach finally broke through on Travis Heer’s 10-yard run with 7:42 remaining to pull to 17-7, and Kai Ross’ 14-yard run with 1:47 left. … Ross rushed for 73 yards and passed for 93. … 

Fountain Valley plays a big game next Friday when it goes on the road against Newport Harbor (3-4, 1-1), which held a fourth quarter lead over Edison before losing, 28-16. … Huntington Beach plays host to Marina. … With Newport Harbor’s overtime victory over Los Alamitos last week, Fountain Valley moved up to No. 4 in the Southern Section Southwest Division rankings, behind La Habra, Edison and Yorba Linda.
