Los Amigos Girls Show Grit in One-Point Loss to Rancho Alamitos

The Lady Lobos played well enough to win Monday, but so did Rancho Alamitos and the game came down to the final 30 seconds, when Los Amigos had the ball but couldn’t score on several tries before turning the ball over with only seconds left. 

The Vaqueros escaped with 48-47 win on the road in a loud Los Amigos gym. Los Amigos is now 8-1 with one game left in league play. Rancho Alamitos is 9-1.

It was a thriller to be sure, and Lady Lobos coach Sabrina White said she was proud of her team when it was over. She also complimented the Rancho Alamitos team.

“They made the big shots when they had to,” White said.

Her Lady Lobos were behind until the third quarter when they played strong defense and made some key steals. But every time they took the lead, the Vaqueros came back with some excellent shooting.

Cindy Guerrero was top scorer for Los Amigos with 23 points, followed by Olisa Horn with 11 points and Abigail Alcala with eight points.

Rancho Alamitos had a balanced attack with Denshay Wallace scoring 18 points, Jade Faletoi with 17 points and Lina Semaia with six points.

The Lady Lobos had a rocky start in the game and trailed 16-10 at the end of the first period. Rancho Alamitos only led 24-21 at halftime as Guerrero helped bring Los Amigos back.

Then with 6:30 left in the third quarter, Horn scored from five feet out to give the Lady Lobos a 27-26 lead. After briefly giving up the lead, Los Amigos had a 41-40 advantage at the end of the third quarter.

Rancho Alamitos held a one-point lead for the last 1:24 of the game as shooting by Los Amigos went cold.
