Los Amigos Set to Begin Playoff Run

After a second-place finish in the Garden Grove League, the Lobos take on Costa Mesa in the first round of the CIF playoffs Friday night.

For Los Amigos, the regular season fell just short of dream-season status when the Lobos dropped their regular-season finale to Rancho Alamitos to finish second in the Garden Grove League. But a whole new dream starts Friday night at Garden Grove High stadium, when a very strong 8-2 Lobos team starts its CIF playoff run against Costa Mesa.

Costa Mesa comes in with an identical 8-2 record, and the similarities don't end there. The Mustangs also had a chance to win their league in the final game of the regular season, but fell short against Estancia. Costa Mesa, like Los Amigos, features a strong ground game lead by Mario Smith, who has rushed for 1,869 yards and 29 touchdowns, and who's averaging more than 10 yards per carry.

When the Mustangs do put the ball in the air, quarterback Nathan Alvis has been effective, completing nearly 68 percent of his passes for 13 touchdowns and only two interceptions.
