Ready, Set, Reel!

Mile Square Regional Park hosts kids' fishing derby.

It is that time of the year for children to get their fishing rods ready for the annual kids’ fishing derby at Mile Square Regional Park this Saturday.

Orange County Parks, California Department of Fish and Game and United Anglers of Southern California invite children ages 15 years and under to compete in the derby for a chance to win prizes.

The park's North Lake will be filled with 1,600 pounds of trout ready to be caught, and winners will be determined based on age group and the weight of the fish.

Registration will be from 7 a.m. to 8:30 a.m., and various fishing clinics will be presenting tips and tutorials on how catch the biggest fish. The competition will begin at 9 a.m. followed by the awards ceremony.

Winners will be chosen for categories of ages 7 and under, 8 to 11 and 12 to 15. a limited number of fishing rods on loan will be available, and event attendees will receive a complimentary barbecue lunch to complete the morning of fun.
