Sports Shorts: Lobos Look to Extend Streak, Barons Travel to Downey

Los Amigos football team hopes to win its fourth game in a row to start the season when it plays Irvine at Garden Grove High on Thursday. Meanwhile, Fountain Valley will play at Downey on Friday, plus volleyball and cross-country news.

In nonleague football action this week, Los Amigos (3-0) meets Irvine (1-1) at Garden Grove High on Thursday at 7 p.m., and Fountain Valley (2-1) plays at Downey (1-2) on Friday at 7 p.m.

The Lobos moved up a couple spots in the to No. 7 after their last week. After the victory, coach Carl Agnew told Patch: "This is good stuff. This is what I like to do. This is how I like to be. It's fun this way. We've still got a lot of work, lots of things to get better at, but we just keep building."

Los Amigos, which is averaging 36 points per game, is led on offense by junior running back Jerry Saldivar (145 yards rushing per game) and senior quarterback Danny Hernandez (116 yards passing per game). Against Loara, senior Robert Bonilla returned an interception 65 yards for a touchdown.

Irvine averages 19 points a game and is led by a couple of sophomores: running back Gary Renteria (38 yards rushing per game) and quarterback Ryan Goodman (81.5 yards passing per game). The Vaqueros opened their season with a 23-10 loss to South Torrance, then bounced back to beat Santa Ana Valley, 28-0.

Irvine suffered a blow in the spring of 2010 when Davonte Young, who rushed for 1,612 yards as a freshman, transferred to Tustin High. He was ruled ineligible to play for the Tillers by the Southern Section, which ruled he had transferred for athletic reasons, so in August of 2010, he enrolled at St. John Bosco of the Trinity League. This season, Young is the leading rusher for the Braves, who are ranked No. 3 in the Pac-5 Division.

Fountain Valley, which opened its season in Henderson, Nev., with a thrilling 52-49 victory over Green Valley, stumbled the following week in a , but rebounded last week to beat Corona, 28-10.

Chris d’Entremont has replaced the injured Kai Fernandez at quarterback for the Barons and against Corona, the junior completed 10 of 15 passes for 173 yards, including touchdown passes of 13 and 26 yards to senior Sean Myers. Senior running back Chris Calvillo scored on runs of two and 72 yards.

Downey opened its season with a 38-28 loss to Mayfair (the same team Los Alamitos defeated 56-21) and a 42-7 loss to La Serna before getting its first victory last week, 50-14 over Schurr of Montebello. In that game, senior Alex Martinez rushed for 116 yards and two touchdowns in only seven carries.

TIME KEEPS ON TICKING, TICKING...

If a football team leads an opponent by 35 points or more by the end of three quarters of play, there will be a running clock during the fourth quarter. This “mercy rule,” approved by the CIF Southern Section last spring, will be in effect for all CIF Southern Section football games -- nonleague, league and the playoffs -- beginning this fall.

During a “running clock,” the clock will be stopped only after a score, a fair catch, a charged team timeout or an official’s timeout. Coaches can agree to establish a running clock earlier in the game, but if the points gap between the teams is reduced to less than 35 points in the fourth quarter, the running clock will remain in operation.
