This weekend marked the 40th anniversary of Title IX, the landmark legislation that granted equality to women in institutions of higher education, and helped increase the number of women’s athletic programs across the nation.
Since the passage of Title IX, the number of girls who compete in high school sports is 10 times what it was 40 years ago, growing from 300,000 to three million today. Women playing college sports has risen from 30,000 in 1972 to 190,000 today.
Title XI also expanded educational opportunities for women, creating equal access to educational opportunities in a full range of academic subjects and allowed women to pursue careers as lawyers, doctors and scientists.
