Hair Questions Answered

Seeking those full, lustrous locks? These tips will help.

Q. My hair is shoulder length with no body. How can I get more body?

—Linda from Laguna Beach

A. Linda, layering your hair creates volume. Also cutting bangs creates a completely different look. Body waves add fullness. Velcro rollers or a hot iron helps to add fullness.

Q. I bought a box color and put it on my hair. Now my hair looks black and ugly...help!

—Debbie from Aliso Viejo

A. Debbie, I know commercials on TV make it seem like anyone can color their hair. But reality is you need a professional. Now that your hair is black you need to use a color removal. You need a professional to remove the dark color without damage. Do not try this at home. You are probably looking at 2 to 3 hours of color correction. That ranges from $100 to $150 an hour. That $15 box color ruined your hair and now it will cost you $200 or more to fix. Again, please consult your professional.

I was actually thinking in terms of looking a little more like 'Old Man Time' vs. 'Papa Carlo'. heh. But that is taboo in our society so most hairdressers would probably throw their arms up in frustration with me. heh. Good luck, Tim. Stick with the ladies hair. There's no money in it with a guy like me. heh.

Tim, any other ideas concerning the question from Linda? I have longer than shoulder length, fine hair. I don't want to put layers in because I do like to wear it straight - it looks really pretty - and I don't like the look of layers in straight hair. However, the hair is too flat on top near the roots - I tease near the roots gently and spray and that usually works - but I would like some other ideas that may not be as damaging as teasing. Any products - new hairsprays, appliances, styling tips? ( don't want extensions - I have clip -ins and I never use them because I really need the "oomph" at the root close to the part..... Thanks so much

Seamless layers is a great haircut to have lift at the root but still have that one length look. And when the hair is blown out straight it looks one length. Also with seamless layers when hair is curled the curl will last longer .

Wow thank you Tim for your very quick response - I guess it's difficult to take that plunge since I have had quite a few stylists in the past recommend layers and then I hated what they did and the subsequent waiting period for it to completely grow out. Though it has been a long time. It sounds like they really have to know what they are doing. Tell me, does the model in this photo have "seamless" layers? ...and are you local and accepting new clients?

Yes she has seamless layers. When we diffuse her hair it is curly . But it is very important to bust out the blow dry first then touch up with iron if needed.
