Resident Receives Volunteer Merit Award

Cheryl Norton has volunteered in Fountain Valley since 1975.

A woman who has volunteered in Fountain Valley since 1975 was recently honored for her community service efforts.

Cheryl Norton, was recognized by District Ten of the California Parks & Recreation Society on Thursday, April 18 at an awards ceremony held at the Cypress Community Center. Every year the group recognizes people who have improved the quality of life in their communities.

In a statement issued by the city officials, City Manager Raymond Kromer said
"Fountain Valley is fortunate to have an individual such as Cheryl Norton in their community and who knows what she’ll do next."

Norton began volunteering with elementary schools, served as a Fountain Valley School District trustee and has been responsible for heading various committees and founding organizations including the Fountain Valley Educational Foundation, Fountain Valley Pony Baseball and Fountain Valley High School’s Grad Night.

She has also served twice as event chair of the Fountain Valley Summerfest and is currently planning the 5th annual event. Summerfest attracts more than 25,000 people and generates enough revenue to offset all Summerfest expenses, and the expenses of other annual free city events such as Concerts in the Park, Tree Lighting and the Easter Egg Hunt, city officials said.

Norton is also a director on the Fountain Valley Community Foundation which supports many recreation programs including events, scholarships, Disabled Dances and a senior nutrition program.

Norton was nominated for the Volunteer Merit Award by the Fountain Valley Recreation & Community Services Division.
