Local Runners Race to Help Community Programs

Fountain Valley holds its third annual Fit to be Square 5K Fun Run: Fitness and Animal Expo.

The grass was still damp from Friday night’s rain, but the next morning came with clear skies and Fountain Valley residents gathered Saturday morning at the Recreational Center to support the city’s third annual Fit to be Square 5K Fun Run: Fitness and Animal Expo.

“It’s supposed to rain right after [this event],” said Community Foundation President and event coordinator Glenn Grandis. And it did, but not until the final runner reached the finish line.

Runners and walkers, from first-timers to experienced athletes, sped side-by-side on the 3.1 mile course with the help of FVHS cheerleaders chanting words of encouragements to keep the spirit going. Luis Morales finished first with a time of 15 minutes 31 seconds.

Volunteers helped runners re-boost their energies by passing out water, snacks and goodie bags at the end of the race. Competitors with the best time in each of the age categories took home medals. Placing in first place for ages 18 and under were Carmille Garcia and Luis Morales, Sami Little and Arturo Diaz for ages 19 to 39, and Alicia Light for ages 40 and up.

After the race, the crowd proceeded to the gymnasium to watch 14 dogs, one cat and their owners prepare to impress judges Mayor Steve Nagel and Council Members Mark McCurdy and Michael Vo, as they competed for a winning spot for best costume, funniest costume and best team.

Event sponsors supported the event by providing health information while local businesses sold expo-related merchandise. Mayor Nagel was proud to see the community come together as he looked out to the sea of people inside the gymnasium. “This is what it’s all about – having fun while supporting our local programs,” he said.
