National Night Out Features 'Rango' at Recreation Center

The 4th annual National Night Out is Tuesday. The city will be promoting free programs and safety services, and even offering free food, demonstrations and a movie.

The City of Fountain Valley is promoting safety throughout the community on Tuesday, Aug. 7 with their 4th annual National Night Out at the Fountain Valley Recreation Center and Sports Complex, 16400 Brookhurst St.

This free community event brings awareness to safety services and programs available throughout the city with free demonstrations, fun activities and food.

This nationally celebrated campaign, which is coordinated by the Fountain Valley Police Department in partnership with the Fountain Valley Recreation and Community Services Division, is a family-friendly event. It will include booths offering useful information on local crime prevention programs such as the Neighborhood Watch Program. There will be demonstrations from the FVPD and their canines, from the fire department and the SWAT team with their Bearcat, and from a ballistic engineered armored response vehicle.

The Fountain Valley National Night Out begins at 5 p.m. and will be followed by a dusk showing of the family-friendly film “Rango,” a comedy about a chameleon who pursues on an adventure in a lawless desert town.

This event is anticipated to draw about 300 people and is meant to draw ties between community members and local law enforcement, as well as to promote and encourage safety throughout the city.

Community Service Officer Sherri Larner says the campaign helps bring people together and to bring awareness to safety programs available to the public.

“[This event] is to expand National Night Out, a campaign that encourages people to say no to crime,” Larner said. “It promotes police-community partnerships. And we want our neighbors and residents to lock their doors and windows and to turn on the patio light and to come outside and meet neighbors and come to the park and make police department and community relations and find out about what they can do to continue to prevent crime in their area.”
