OC Holiday Events: Dec. 7-14

Ice kingdoms, Christmas trains, boat parades, tree lightings and more. Here's a rundown of holiday events in and around Orange County. This list will be updated periodically, so check back for more events -- and if there's something we missed, please let us know.

Friday, Dec. 7

• The annual Christmas Train chugs through Irvine Regional Park in Orange on Nov. 30-Dec. 2, Dec. 7-9, and Dec. 14-23. Activities in Santa’s Village include story time with Mrs. Claus and a moon bounce. Irvine Regional Park, 1 Irvine Park Road, Orange.

• A screening of the Christmas film classic It’s a Wonderful Life at South Coast Cinema will be among the highlights of Laguna Beach’s Hospitality Night, Dec. 7, during which Forest Avenue will be closed off. South Coast Cinema, 162 S. Coast Highway, Laguna Beach.

• Hal Landon Jr. plays Scrooge for the 33rd year in Dickens’ classic A Christmas Carol at South Coast Repertory in Costa Mesa. Through Dec. 24. 655 Town Center Drive, Costa Mesa.

• The Ice Kingdom at Chill in Long Beach has taken winter to extremes by using 2 million pounds of ice to turn the Queen Mary Dome into an igloo. It’s cold enough that each visitor will be provided with a parka. Massive ice carvings were created by Chinese artisans, some of whom have participated in the Harbin International Ice and Snow Sculpture Festival. There’s also an ice slide, ice cave, Santa's Toyland, a Fairytale Castle, a Nativity scene, interfaith Ice Grotto and, of course, an outdoor ice rink. It all lasts until Jan. 6. 1126 Queens Highway, Long Beach.

Saturday, Dec. 8

• The annual Laguna Niguel Holiday Parade rides into town with this year's theme "Honoring Our Heroes." The parade will be filled with beautiful equestrian units, patriotic and inspirational military tributes, spirit-filled youth groups, classic auto clubs, talented marching bands, and some of the biggest attractions in the nation! The parade is on Crown Valley Parkway between Nueva Vista and Crown Valley Community Park. The designated drop off area for entries and guests is at the northwest corner of Moulton and Crown Valley Parkway. Kyla Ross is this year's Sports Grand Marshal, she was a member of the dynamic 2012 Olympic Gymnastics Team where at the age of 15, she scored a Gold medal in the Team All-Around Competition.

• The animals at the OC Zoo in Orange get in on the holiday action on Saturday, Dec. 8, at their home in Irvine Regional Park. Human children can attend story time with Mrs. Claus and watch the zoo animals receive treats hidden inside Christmas trees. There will also be seasonally inspired crafts and holiday face-painting. 1 Irvine Park Road, Orange.

• The whole family can decorate a gingerbread house together at a workshop offered twice on Dec. 8 — one at 10 a.m. and another at 12:30 p.m. — in Mission Viejo at the Norman P. Murray Community and Senior Center. The cost is $60 per family. 

• Pacific Symphony presents The Nutcracker for Kids, a 45-minute version of Tchaikovsky's ballet created for children ages 5-11. It's at 10 and 11:30 a.m. at the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall at the Segestrom Center for the Arts in Costa Mesa.

• The Metrolink Holiday Toy Express, which delivers entertainment while collecting toys for needy children, makes a stop Saturday, Dec. 8, in San Clemente’s North Beach (7:45 p.m.). Please bring an unwrapped toy.

• More than 1,000 luminarias will light up the buildings and paths at Heritage Hill Historical Park in Lake Forest on Dec. 8 and 9 during the annual Candlelight Walk on the park's 4 acres. Carolers, local musicians, storytellers and flamenco dancers will provide entertainment at the event, which runs from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. both days. 25151 Serrano Road, Lake Forest.

• The Sawdust Art Festival’s 22nd Annual Winter Fantasy, “Art for the Holidays,” continues in Laguna Beach on weekends through Dec. 9 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Exhibitors will create, display and sell original creations, which will include jewelry, clothing, paintings, woodwork and blown glass. 935 Laguna Canyon Road, Laguna Beach.

Sunday, Dec. 9

• All Is Calm, an “ode to peace” that features words and songs drawn from the era of World War I, tells of the spontaneous truce between Allied and German forces in no-man’s land over Christmas 1914. This co-production of Cantus and Theater Latté Da is on tour and stops at Soka University in Aliso Viejo on Dec. 9 at 7 p.m. Soka University, 1 University Drive, Aliso Viejo.

• Landlocked Villa Park will hold its 15th annual Great Dry Land Yacht Parade on the streets. The parade starts at 5 p.m. at Fitschen Ranch Road and ends at Towne Centre at 6:30, where there will be food and music. According to parade rules, “a boat may be defined as anything that can be towed at a speed of up to five miles an hour.” Fitschen Ranch Road, Villa Park.

• An Irish Holiday Festival at the Bowers Museum in Santa Ana will include a concert and storytelling Sunday from 1:30-3:30 p.m. at the Norma Kershaw Auditorium. Among the musicians will be fiddlers, pipers and guitarists. The price is $15, but there is no admission fee to the John M. Lee Court, where from noon to 4 there will be live harp music, carolers and roving musicians, as well as vendors selling Irish wares.

• Chabad Jewish Center will hold a public menorah lighting at 5 p.m. in Mission Viejo to celebrate Hanukkah. A children's choir will perform, and there will be other music, as well as face-painting and dreidel-cookie decorating, and latkes and hot cocoa will be available. Every child will get a Hanukkah gift.

It starts off Bay Island at 6:30 p.m. and should finish at the same spot around 9 p.m. The parade runs nightly through Dec. 23.

• The final night of the 104th edition of the Newport Beach Christmas Boat Parade will end with fireworks. The parade's theme is “Surf, Sand and Santa!" and it features decorated canoes and kayaks, as well decked-out yachts traveling along the harbor. It starts off of Bay Island at 6:30 p.m. and should finish at the same spot around 9 p.m., when fireworks will be launched from the Balboa Pier.

• Decorated homes and boats are spotlighted during the Huntington Harbour Cruise of Lights, which finishes up tonight, Dec. 23. Several tour times are offered.
