Fountain Valley Gets Ready to Rock for Record Store Day This Saturday

Indie record shops around the world see a nice spike in sales at this annual celebration of old-school-method music buying.

This Saturday, April 20, is the sixth annual Record Store Day.

That means it behooves you to head over to either Dr. Freecloud's Record Shoppe or TKO Records, the Fountain Valley participants in what's become an annual good time designed to coax people away from digital downloading and buy music the way us oldsters did back in the day: Inside a glorious independent record shop where you're forced to interact with real live human beings standing behind a counter.

To motivate music buyers into parting with their money for this worldwide event, a slew of bands both legendary and obscure are once again releasing highly collectible limited-run pressings (vinyl, in many cases) of their music, including the Rolling Stones, R.E.M. and the Cure, and more contemporary bands like Mumford & Sons and Best Coast.

For the full rundown of what's arriving Saturday, click the PDF file in the box on the right -- though it's important to know that not all stores, including Dr. Freecloud's and TKO, will have everything on the list, so it's best to give 'em a call and ask (657-888-4695 for Freecloud's; 714-962-0500 for TKO). Or hey, just show up Saturday and see what buried treasures you stumble across.

Both stores will essentially be having all-day parties to celebrate the day. At Freecloud's, owner Ron D Core will be busting out some of his rare vinyl, including lots of metal, punk, hardcore, drum-and-bass, funk, soul and dubstep. There'll also be open decks if you want to showcase your DJ talents (or lack thereof) to a packed store.

Across the parking lot at TKO, meanwhile, Orange County punk legend (and former California gubernatorial candidate) Jack Grisham will be hanging out and talking music and anything else on his ever-quotable mind. Ask him to tell you about what he once carved into his arm with a razor blade while working at a hardware store, because we can't say here ...

Dr. Freecloud's Record Shoppe is at 18960 Brookhurst St. TKO Records is in the same shopping center at 18948 Brookhurst St.

Happy listening!
